Why do we cry?

Tearing is a unique physiological phenomenon in humans and is a comprehensive response to emotions and physiological mechanisms. When we experience sadness, happiness, anger, joy, or other intense emotions, tears often flow naturally.

Biologically, tears are secreted by tear glands. Our eyes have three different types of tear glands: the lacrimal gland, accessory glands, and oral glands. The lacrimal gland is the main tear gland located in the posterior part of the upper eyelid. Accessory glands are distributed around our eye sockets. These tear glands secrete tears, which then flow into the nasal cavity through tear ducts.

Tears consist of various components, including water, proteins, electrolytes, antimicrobial substances, and other chemicals. When our bodies are in an emotionally aroused or stressed state, the nervous system sends signals to stimulate the tear glands to produce more tears. This explains why we tend to shed more tears when experiencing sadness or pain.

Crying helps to vent and relax emotions. Tears contain neurotransmitters and endorphins, substances that can relieve pain and stress. When we cry, the brain also releases endorphins, causing us to feel emotional release and comfort.

In addition, tearing also serves to protect the eyes. Tears lubricate the surface of the eyeball, keeping the eye tissues moist, and prevent dryness and infections. When our eyes are irritated by substances such as dust, smoke, or irritating gases like onion fumes, tears automatically increase to wash away the irritants and reduce discomfort.

Finally, crying plays an important role as a communication tool in human society. Tears are sometimes considered a "non-verbal" way of conveying emotions and meaning. When we display emotions such as pain, gratitude, or being moved, tears can evoke empathy and care from others.

In summary, crying is a complex physiological and psychological process closely related to our emotions, eye protection, stress relief, and social communication. Regardless of the reasons for our tears, they are a natural response of our bodies and minds, helping us deal with various emotions and challenges in life.
